Boko Haram Logistic Suppliers Uncover

New reports reveal that Boko Haram logistics supply syndicates discovered among woodcutters and charcoal merchant. The disclosure was made during an interview session in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital by the Acting General Officer Commanding (GOC) 7 Division, Brig.-Gen. Bulama Biu.

In its effort to tackle the threat of Boko Haram in the North East and other security challenges in the country. Nigerian army recruits roughly two thousand new personnel yearly. Since the inception of the insurgency in 2009, thousands were killed and millions displaced from their residence.

According to Vanguard, Brig.-Gen. Bulama Biu disclosed that there is an intelligence report, which indicates that some members of the insurgent guise as firewood and charcoal dealers in order to fund the activities of the terrorist group. “Some of them are errand boys of the Boko Haram insurgents, they hide food items, drugs, petrol, and other items beneath their trucks, and supplied them to the terrorists.

“We also found out that some of them are running businesses on behalf of the Boko Haram insurgents. “They go deep into the forest where ordinary people could not venture; to cut down trees, burn and produce charcoal. “This could not be possible except they are in agreement with the insurgents. “We arrested some of them and they made quite revealing testimonies, we shall fish them out to put an end to their nefarious activities,”

He disclosed that the intelligence report indicated that some dealers in Maiduguri were hiding under the guise of firewood trade to aid the insurgents. “Some of them are errand boys of the Boko Haram insurgents, they hide food items, drugs, petrol, and other items beneath their trucks, and supplied them to the terrorists.

Biu further explained that the ban was to checkmate criminal activities for a short term among the dealers and not to make life hard for firewood and charcoal consumers.  However, to mitigate the hardship experienced by charcoal users, the military has allowed the supply of charcoal from a few other states across the nation including Oyo, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, and Niger. The supply from the states is strictly supervised, Biu added.

 

Commenting over the ban on firewood and charcoal trading by the military. Chairman, Borno state chapter of the Firewood Sellers Association of Nigeria, Malam Madugu Ali, expressed their shock over the military allegation. He added that in the guidelines of members of the association, before giving them entry permission to Maiduguri, the union engaged the Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF) to support the military screening of its members.

He also said that their members are victims of the insurgency, and the union has taken measures to check vehicles carrying firewood or charcoal to Maiduguri to get rid of lawbreaking among the association members.
